Fall 2005
In March, the Training Centre students were invited to participate in the Peter Gzowski PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy. The mini course was a lot of fun and challenging in the snow. The rules were given by the king of the Snow Castle in Yellowknife. Included in our group was a board member’s daughter, Angel, who was visiting the city. Thanks to her help and Mina’s holes in one, we won the tournament!! We also enjoyed the Tunes at Noon with Saskatchewan musician, Connie Kaldor, and radio host, Shelagh Rogers, from CBC. Thanks to all the organizers especially the NWT Literacy Council and committee, ABC Canada, and the team of celebrities who travelled to the North and the generosity of sponsors who fund literacy programs.

SEWING PROJECT February-June 2006 |
In February the class began a sewing project with making moccasins and preparing for a fashion show to be held in June 2006. The project leader is Alice Wifladt who has several years of experience with sewing traditional clothing. She demonstrated how to cut out the uppers, draw the flower and mirror image, and to begin the beadwork. Alice hopes to open her own sewing business in the future. Her leadership is greatly appreciated. Students have raised money for the sewing supplies through recycling classrooms and home bottles and cans, and 50-50 draws.

Work Experience November 2005 |
| Students worked at preparing cover letters, resumes, reference lists, and completing criminal record checks. Below are photos of students who worked in the Yellowknife area businesses and agencies in November 2005 for 2 weeks. The staff of the training centre would like to thank all the employers who generously shared their time and locations for our students. Placements were as follows: | ||||||||||||
Candace Balsillie - White Point Beach Exploration I worked on filing and assisting with getting the office organized. I was surprised at the different kinds of careers people had in this workplace. |
Audrea Chicksi - Department of Justice -Community Justice Division It was a pleasure working with everyone. As a trainee I enjoyed working with the staff, learning more of office work, filing, and being a receptionist in this department. It was very busy and I felt happy to help them. |
Susie Fatt - Pamela Murray Accounting I worked on matching receipts, calculating work hours, and shredding outdated files. Pamela was very patient and helped me start working on Simply Accounting in the actual workplace. I appreciated her friendliness and patience. |
Rhea Kaye - Probation Services It was a pleasure working with the staff. I enjoyed the atmosphere and getting an insight of something different, it was something very interesting. I will be considering this type of employment for the future. |
Lucy Anne Kenny - Yellowknife Day Care It was pleasure working with the staff and the children. This opportunity gave me insight into the work at a Day Care, and working with the children. I will be considering this type of employment for the future. |
Mina Moses - Salvation Army Thrift Store I did fashion window design, reorganized displays, performed customer service duties, operated the cash register , prepared and looked after bank deposits, and I very much enjoyed everything. The manager was very friendly and encouraging. |
Susie Kapolak Ohokgak - Kitimeot Boarding Home I worked at the Kitimeot Boarding Home. I especially enjoyed learning about the front desk duties, keeping the occupant and meal-list up-to-date, and making travel arrangements for the patients who were ready to go home. I got hands-on experience on the Front Desk duties. I have also truly enjoyed myself working with my own people. |
Flossie Oakoak - Employability I enjoyed working at Employability for my work experience. Everyone was so helpful and nice to me there. I answered the phone, taking messages, and I greeted people at the door. |
Gerry Ohokak - Hovat Construction (1985) Ltd.I sincerely enjoyed working with Hovat Construction and learning more skills. One morning, we were putting up vapor barrier in the garage and we were on scaffolds by the entrance and we locked the door of the garage entrance as we were busy in that area. I realized we didn’t want anybody to open the door, slamming into the scaffold that I was atop of, knocking me over and into a terrible accident. I learned more about safety precautions and how the trade of carpentry works. I hope to pursue a career in carpentry. |
Venessa Tobac - Healing Drum Society I am thankful to the staff for sharing their time, knowledge, and allowing me to do my work experience in their office. I’ve learned how to become more organized and knowledgeable in the administrative profession. |

Christmas 2005 Openhouse There were lots of friends and family who stopped by our annual event. Staff and students prepared trays and decorated the centre. Students also donated Christmas stockings to needy families and to the food drive through CJCD. Mina Moses sewed extra toys to the material and students shopped and sorted toys for each stockings. It was a lot of fun!!! John Tees and George Tuccaroo sang Christmas songs and accompanied Santa at the children’s Christmas party at Native Women’s Association. A big thank you to all the band members. Ho ho ho. |
