| The following are photos are of students who worked in the Yellowknife area businesses and agencies in November 2006 for 2 weeks. The staff and students of the training centre thank all the employers who generously shared their time and locations for our students. Placements were as follows: | ||||
Susan Chaffee - Vital Abel Boarding Home Just peeking out from the background, I’ve enjoyed working with Patsy and Johnny while learning more about cooking in the kitchen. Some of the things I did not know how to cook were showed to me such as making cookies and banana bread. The history of the V.A.B. was important to me since I have family whose pictures are on the wall. |
Celine Mantla - Wal-Mart I’ve wanted to work at this store for a long time and learn how to be a cashier. I am pleased to get the opportunity. Lucy, Cathy, and all the staff have been friendly and welcoming. |
Sheila Jewell - Airport Transportation: GNWT I learned the filing system with government record keeping and assisted with filing as well as reception duties. |
Lance Laroque - Kingland Ford I enjoyed working with the mechanic technicians to learn more about the trade. Everyone gave me great advice. |
Susie Kapolak-Ohokgak - Abe Miller Centre I worked with as a community inclusion worker and helped with crafts, work activities and literacy activities with the clients. Everyone loved getting their picture taken. |
Shirley Cook - Aven Manor Senior Care Facility I worked in the kitchen with baking, cleaning, and preparing meals for the elders. I enjoyed the work and had great meals! |
Darcey Causa - Public Works and Services/ GNWT This opportunity gave me insight into the government services. I will be considering this type of employment for the future. |
Marjorie Sibbald - Department of Environment and Natural Resources I assisted with data entry in the office for licensing especially hunting licenses. The office staff was patient with me. |
Denise Judas - Royal Canadian Legion/Martin’s Catering I assisted with the lunch buffet and learned about making new recipes. Everyone was friendly. I really felt like the cook’s helper! |
Alice Wifladt - Native Women’s Association Training Centre I spent time getting caught up on missed work and did some sewing. I enjoyed learning more about decorating, problem-solving and using the computer much more. |
Walter Harry - Native Women’s Association Training Centre I gained more confidence in getting caught up in my courses and enjoyed redecorating the centre. I learned more about using the computer and problem-solving. |
Therese Franki-Sangris - I & D Management/Diavik Diamond Mine I learned more about heavy-duty trucking. I completed more than 20 modules to prepare to go into a truck then we had a white out for a couple of days. Eventually I was able to try going out on the truck with a trainer. It was a little scarey but I loved it. I’d like to work at this job in the future. |
Alice Martin - Native Women’s Association Training Centre I gained more confidence in getting caught up in my courses and enjoyed redecorating the centre. I learned more about using the computer. |
Tanya Harry - Signature Suites Hotel/Fraser Tower Suite Hotel I enjoyed the work of Front Desk attendant and the computer system. All the things that my supervisor showed me I was able to do!! |
Kimberly Moreside - All the Workplaces I enjoyed sitting in on all the interviews with students. Most of the time the questions asked were similar to our expectations: What do you know about the organization? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Given a situation what would you do? Each student had unique experiences and several were offered work either right away, or for the summer. It was awesome to see the successful experiences of each student and the joy they received. The last part is finishing off with the thank you letters and updating the resumes, doing work log evaluations, and updating the portfolios. Well done! |
