SEWING PROJECT February-June 2006 In March and April the class continued a sewing project with making moccasins and other traditional clothing. Mona Evaglok and some of us persevered with their beading. Susan Chaffee demonstrated the way to stretch and soften the leather to make the gathers on the hide. The project leader is Alice Wifladt who has several years of experience with sewing traditional clothing. She demonstrated how to sew a backing on the uppers, and how to cut out the hide; Alice hopes to open her own sewing business in the future. Her leadership is greatly appreciated. Students have raised money for the sewing supplies through a cultural awareness contribution from Education, Culture and Employment, recycling bottles and cans, and 50-50 draws. |
Congratulations Kilabuk who is a winner in our 50-50 draw! Susie Ohokgak sold the winning ticket. Recycling gets done with the help of Rachelle Tanguay who drives our collections to the depot.

Amanda Anavilok - EMCO I have learned a lot and can appreciate Office Administration work for a future career. All the things that my supervisor showed me I was able to do!! |
Sharon Apsimik - Allison MacAteer House Writing in a logbook helped me keep track of all I learned and I am glad I did it. Working with women and children that are in need of special attention was one of my greater challenges. I enjoyed working with 'Family Fun Night'. |
Susan Chaffee - NWT Literacy Council It was pleasure working with the staff and on the projects such as making children’s books. This opportunity gave me insight into the work at the council. Susie Fatt - Native Women’s Association Training Centre I enjoyed catching up on school work and working on my time management skills. |
Susie Kapolak-Ohokgak - Bathurst Inlet Developments I enjoyed the challenge of learning the variety of tasks that were given to me. The staff was patient and friendly and let me learn at my own pace. |
Rhea Kaye - Native Women’s Association Training Centre I enjoyed sewing the curtains. It was nice to learn how to use the sewing machine. |
Lucy Ann Kenny - Vital Abel Boarding Home This opportunity gave me insight into the organization. I particularly enjoyed meeting the needs of the patients from Deline and different communities. I will be considering this type of employment for the future. |
Mina Moses - Signature Suites Hotel/Fraser Tower Everything went well. All the co-workers were friendly, experienced and very helpful. There was "Super Teamwork" with the staff. They were openly willing to teach me! |
Flossie Oakoak - Aven Manor Senior Care Facility I had fun working with the seniors and staff, and I learned a few things from them. I worked in the kitchen and tried new recipes. I also got some advice on restaurant/cafeteria business. |
