Training Centre

There have been a lot of positive changes at the Training Centre over the last year. Spencer Tracy, our new coordinator, has bonded well with the students and has accomplished a lot since he began in October 2007.

At this time there are approximately 15 full-time students enrolled in our Adult Education and Pre-Employment Program. Our adult education classes continue to focus on math, English and computers as well as a host of other life-skills and traditional workshop activities. Classes began in September and will terminate at the end of June.

Beginning in September 2008, the NWA Training Centre engaged in a partnership with the Mine Training Society and Chief Pierre’s Catering. The partnership is designed to prepare students to become licensed apprenticed cooks. The training centre has been responsible for the academic component of the training (math, science, English) and has been preparing a group of ten students to write the pre-trades apprenticeship exam. Talks are in place to do another intake for the program in September 2009.

The Native Women’s Association Training Centre also secured funding under a project titled: “Reconnecting Elders and Youth”.  Through funding from Human Resources and Development Canada, the Training Centre has been able to hold numerous events that bring Elders and youth together to share past experiences and present challenges.  Most recently, this involved renting a bus to transport a group to Bechecko’ to watch the regional handgames championships.

Increased projects and funding for the training centre has also allowed us to hire additional staff. Libby Whittall has been hired on to teach English, Computers, and coordinate the Elder’s program. Debbie Anderson continues as a part-time language specialists as well as an English instructor.  We also have a handful of volunteers who provide one on one support for students who feel they need extra assistance.
